The goal was to catch up on tree removal and uncover partially buried portions of the lock. The VCNS has been doing cleanups at this lock for decades. The lock at Palmyra Mills is the only intact structure in this area that boasts a mill ruins, dam ruins and covered bridge piers. Great Bridge Heritage Festival a Success

[caption id="attachment_14861" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Dr. Bill Trout at the Great Bridge Waterways Heritage Festival, 2016.[/caption] The Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Foundation held their 7th annual Waterways Heritage Festival on October 15th, 2016. The festival is held at a park in Chesapeake, Virginia adjacent to where the Elizabeth River meets the Chesapeake and Albemarle Canal. It is free, includes boat rides through the Great Bridge Lock and has many vendors and attractions celebrating Chesapeake’s waterways and cultural heritage. The organizers feature the VC&NS prominently in their advertising for this event, and generously provide hotel lodging and food to the VC&NS volunteers. Tireless James – River Cleanup Event – October 22, 2016 – Howardsville to Scottsville

Tireless James River Cleanup
Several of the Batteaux who participate in the annual James River Batteau Festival will be helping the James River Association on October 22nd, 2016 to clean out tires from the James River from Goolsby's Falls, down-river from Howardsville to Scottsville. Canoeists and Kayakers are welcome to join in the fun. All help is appreciated! All boaters are asked if they can help get tires out of the James, starting AFTER Goolsby's Falls. VC&NS past President, Mr. Brian Coffield, is planning a canal lock cleanup event at the Palmyra Lock on the Rivanna River. This is a great opportunity for members to be involved with an activity with the VC&NS by helping clean up this lock. Volunteers are needed and all help will be appreciated!
