JRBF Spring Meeting in Scottsville – Sunday, May 15th, 2016

The spring meeting of the James River Batteau Festival was held at the Tavern on the James in Scottsville, Virginia. Representatives from most of the batteau groups were in attendance. Andrew Shaw, the new JRBF Chairman, talked about the sites and various announcements.

Canoeists and other individuals not included in the immediate crew or ground crew of a batteau group covered by their batteau group’s boat fee are asked to please pay a daily or weekly camping fee. These fees help cover the cost of portable toilets, insurance etc. Camping fees can be paid for at the T-Shirt booth during the JRBF or pay online in advance of the festival. Permits won’t be mailed but DJ will have a list of people that have paid. (DJ is the lady who runs the JRBF T-Shirt Booth in case you don’t know her yet.)

The most important change is with the Slate River site. We can no longer use the old Solite Plant site due to the property being sold. The new site is just up-stream, across the Slate River from the old site. If you remember the point with the concrete steps and rope-swing across from the old landing thats where we will be. The camping area will be roped off and campers are asked to please respect the markers as we are lucky to obtain the new site and thank the landowners for allowing us to camp there. A new map and directions will be posted on this site in the calendar of events posting soon.

Gail Timberlake stood up and awarded Ralph Smith with the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Virginia Canals & Navigations Society. Gail is the current VCNS President and Ralph is the retiring JRBF Chairman. The VCNS is the parent organization of the JRBF and JRBF members are asked to please join the VCNS.

Roger Nelson was also presented with a certificate of appreciation by Gail.

It was very good to see old friends and start out the new batteau season in a great way.
