Bill Trout speaks to Coastal Canoeists at Douthat State Park – April 27, 2019.

Bill Trout presented his new book Amazing Virginia Canals to the Coastal Canoeists at their spring meeting at Douthat State Park, near Clifton Forge, Virginia.

After the pot-luck dinner at an open pavilion beside the lake at Douthat, Bill spoke about his new book. He held up laminated poster versions of many of the pages of the book and explained many details about the history of batteaux, and other boats such as gondolas on the Shenandoah River. The Coastal’s members were very nice and listened intently as Bill spoke and answered several questions about the rivers and boats.

This was a fantastic event and we thank the Coastal Canoeists for having us as their program for their spring meeting.

Earlier in the day, members of the Coastal’s paddled on the Jackson River above Covington, led by Martha James. The group included Canoeists and Kayakers of all age groups. The day was beautiful and the water crisp and clear. Helping with the shuttle was really fun. The springtime flowers and leaves starting to get green and seeing the beautiful areas of the upper Jackson was fantastic.
