Most of us have toured local canals, but have you been to a World Canal Conference? From their own web page “The World Canal Conference is the opportunity to bring together hundreds of canal enthusiasts, professionals, and scholars from around the world, to exchange good practices on canals, including the protection of historic canals, harbors, canal trails and amenities, promoting tourism.”
VC&NS has offered our participation when C&O Canal Association hosts WCC 2021. Planning is very early, but we’ve been asked about placing James River Batteaux in the turning basin at Williamsport, Md, a major entry and NPS welcome center. This brings an opportunity for men to pull a batteau from the towpath, and over an aqueduct. The Patomack Canal and Great Falls will surely be included. I’ve recommended Harper’s Ferry for one of the optional visits to either precede or follow the conference. WCC 2021 will likely take place in three states, two rivers and canals! So enter 8/30-9/02 2021 on your calendar and allow two extra days for optional tours.
