Jennifer Wampler of the Department of Conservation and Recreation has invited canal society members to inspect and comment on the draft  Middle James Segment Plan. This plan, covering the river from Lynchburg to Maidens (designated the James River Batteau Festival Trail)  is modeled on the segment plan developed by the National Park Service for the Lower James.
