AMHERST COUNTY BATTEAU DAY

CANCLED DUE TO RAIN.

PLEASE GO TO THE REAL START OF THE JAMES RIVER BATTEAU FESTIVAL ON:

SATURDAY JUNE 16TH,
LAUNCHING FROM PERCIVAL’S ISLAND.

THE BATTEAUX GOING DOWN THE RIVER IS STILL ON!

Join the celebration of the birthplace of the James River Batteau, honoring the Rucker brothers. Event to be held at Rucker’s Landing, Riveredge Park, featuring living history interpreters, including the Rucker brothers, Dr. George Cabell, a spinner, and leather pouch maker, music, games and activities for families, food vendors, and James River related booths.

NiteKap, originally known as “Ken and Alli”, Ken Horne and Allison Johnson now joined by Paul Brockman, will kick-off Amherst County Batteau Day, a one day event on June 8 honoring Benjamin and Anthony Rucker, the inventors of the James River Batteau over two centuries ago. The activities begin at 10 a.m. at Riveredge Park in Madison Heights. This free event is family fun day on the Amherst County bank of the James River and has been organized by Amherst County Recreation and Parks, Amherst County Museum & Historical Society, Rucker Family Society, Virginia Canals and Navigations Society, Amherst County Public Safety, Amherst County Sheriff’s Department, High Peak Sportswear, The Design Group, James River Adventures, Brightwell’s Mill, James River State Park, and Batteaumen of the James River.

NiteKap, a trio of local Bedford musicians who perform an eclectic mix of American folk music. Their stage show spans several centuries and many genres of American folk music. From contemporary Americana to sixteenth century Childe ballads, from classic blues to country music standards (and some that ought to be), NiteKap offers a wide variety of musical styles and arrangements. Allisons’ sparkling lead vocals and intricate harmonies blend perfectly with Ken’s rich baritone leads and Paul’s tenor accompaniment. Accompanied by Ken on finger style guitar, six string banjo and harmonica and Paul on fiddle and mandolin, NiteKap’s musical interludes is entertaining, inspiring, and a whole lot of fun. Other local musicians include Jim Robertson, Marty Liebschner (James River State Park), and African drumming with Eric Megginson.

The celebration will include the participation of living history interpreters, including the Rucker brothers, Dr. George Cabell, Joel Sweeney, a spinner, pouch maker, chair canning, and batteaumen. Activities will include colonial games, tug of war, water related learning for kids, Fire Truck, non-profit information booths, and food vendors.
