On February 8, a small group of people gathered in the courtyard of the Charlottesville Albemarle Historical Society to acknowledge the donation of $25,000.00 to the Hatton Ferry fund.
John and Trula Wright made the donation to help get the ferry operating again, which is a project of the historical society. Both of the Wrights expressed how much the ferry means to them and their family, as Mr. Wright grew up enjoying the ferry.
The funds will cover the cost of procuring an inspection and insurance which is expected to be completed in time for an April opening of the ferry. The executive director of the historical society said they receive many phone calls asking about the ferry operation schedule. He will soon be able to deliver good news rather than no news in response to these questions. Once the ferry is able to operate, a nonprofit will be formed to manage it into the future.
I have offered the assistance of the canal society, but as of yet the scope of that assistance is undefined. If you are interested in this project (as a donor or volunteer) please contact the Charlottesville Albemarle Historical Society.
