Rassawek Fall Festival

Bill Trout and I attended the Fall Festival at Rassawek on October 23 and 24, to represent the VC&NS and educate the public about our mission as well as to solicit new members.

The event was very well advertised and over 5000 people came on the first day alone. Because we were located just inside the entrance, everyone went by our tent and many of them stopped to see what we are all about. It was a very enjoyable event: we sold hundreds of dollars’ worth of atlases, got some new members, and we saw dozens of friends of the batteau festival that we hadn’t seen in years. Also, the Clifton Lee batteau was on display for people to see, thanks to Ryan Hamlet. Near the Clifton Lee was a display of machines from the Tredegar Iron Works, which helped us tell our story about how batteaux and canal boats carried pig iron to the iron works.

We plan to have a display at the Rassawek Spring Jubilee on June 4-5, 2022, and we will be returning in the fall as well. I’ll be reaching out prior to each event for volunteers who would like to join us.
